One injured, dog dies in devastating house fire on Hickory Ln.
By Jay TurnerA Canton couple has been displaced and are mourning the loss of their pet labradoodle and family home following a two-alarm fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon, October 4, on Hickory Lane.
A second fire broke out at the same location early Monday morning, and the home was declared a total loss.
During the initial response, fire crews found the sole occupant who was home at the time injured outside of the residence. The occupant was then transported to a Boston hospital with non-life-threatening burn injuries.
Responding firefighters observed heavy flames coming from a closed porch at the rear of the two-story home that had extended to the roof and attic. They initially attempted an interior attack, but then transitioned to a defensive exterior approach after the roof of the home began to sag and partially collapse.
While battling the fire, they also faced water supply issues due to a nearby fire hydrant not functioning properly.
Firefighters from Stoughton, Randolph, Norwood, Westwood, Sharon and Milton provided mutual aid at the scene, and Dedham firefighters provided station coverage.
While the homeowner was boarding up the home early Monday morning, another fire broke out at the same location, bringing firefighters from Canton and several surrounding communities back to the scene, where they launched an exterior attack to knock down the fire.
During the second fire, a camper vehicle with a fiberglass shell containing propane tanks ignited at the rear of the property, melting the vinyl siding on a neighboring home.
One firefighter was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess-Milton as a precaution.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation by the Canton Fire Department, but fire investigators do not believe them to be suspicious at this time.
The State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office also responded to the scene and will be assisting the Canton Fire Department with the investigation.
The CFD reported that the two residents of the home were able to find temporary housing arrangements with family.
“The fire was well developed prior to our arrival,” said Canton Fire Chief Jamie Meier. “We went into a defensive position early on due to the partial collapse of the roof into the attic space.
“I’d like to commend all of our firefighters who battled this very difficult fire, which unfortunately caused considerable damage, an injury to the occupant and the tragic death of a pet dog inside the home. I’d also like to thank our mutual aid partners who provided support at the scene, along with station coverage. Our thoughts are with the resident as they recover from their injuries and begin the difficult process of moving forward.”
