Northern Spy resurrects stories & flavors from 1775

Northern Spy, a New England-style restaurant located at the Paul Revere Heritage Site in Canton, continues its “Culinary Chronicles of New England” series with a spotlight on the Milton Minutemen on Thursday evening, September 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The event will transport guests back in time for an evening of Revolutionary War stories and a dinner inspired by 1775 tavern fare.

The featured speaker is local historian and cemetery director Lisa Ahern, who leads the research and restoration of Revolutionary War veterans’ headstones at the Milton Cemetery. Ahern will provide an overview of this restoration work while also offering a glimpse into the lives of the militia members who are buried at the cemetery, from local farmers to tradesmen who left their fields to fight the British with little more than their own rifles and New England grit.

Afterward, Marc Sheehan, executive chef at Northern Spy, will serve a dinner inspired by the meal that the Milton militia members ate on their way to join the Continental Army at the Siege of Boston.

Launched in early 2026, Northern Spy’s “Culinary Chronicles of New England” series commemorates Massachusetts’ 250th birthday while exploring the people, ingredients, and traditions that shaped early New England foodways. Each event in the series pairs historians, educators, and culinary experts with Northern Spy’s chef-driven kitchen to bring history to the table through conversation and cuisine inspired by 18th-century New England.

In addition to the “Culinary Chronicles” event, Northern Spy is also hosting a Revolutionary Feast to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence on Wednesday, September 16, at 6 p.m. Hosted by Yankee Magazine’s Amy Traverso, the event will include a cocktail reception with passed snacks and a three-course, family-style feast highlighting New England’s culinary history.
