Champs visit State House

On Monday, June 8, state Senator Paul Feeney and state Rep. Bill Galvin welcomed three state champion teams from Canton High School — one from each season — to the Massachusetts State House. On hand for the recognition were members and coaches of the MIAA Division 2 state champion golf and boys ice hockey teams and the newly crowned Division 3 state champion girls outdoor track team.

“It’s not every day that I get to welcome state champions from my district to the State House, let alone three teams all at once,” said Senator Feeney. “Given Canton High School’s propensity for winning, I was thrilled to welcome Canton’s state champion golf, boys hockey and girls outdoor track teams and recognize the players, coaches and administrators who brought these historic victories home. Thank you for making me a very proud senator.”

“It was a pleasure hosting these student athletes at the State House to recognize their incredible achievements,” added Rep. Galvin, who’s a lifelong Canton resident. “We are fortunate to have a stellar athletics department at Canton High School, which is led by dedicated staff and coaches. Canton High athletics continue to impress year after year and have made our community extremely proud.”

Upon arriving to the State House, the student athletes, coaches and administrators were welcomed to the Senate Chamber, where Senator Feeney was presiding over a Senate session. From the Senate rostrum, Feeney and Galvin recognized the teams and recorded their success in the Journal of the Senate. The teams then proceeded to the House Chamber with the senator and representative before taking team pictures on the grand staircase of the State House.

Canton’s two state legislators also hosted a pizza luncheon for the athletes and personally congratulated every player and coach with congratulatory citations from each chamber. Following lunch, the teams met with Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll in the governor’s Executive Suite.

Division 2 State Champion Golf Team: On October 28, 2025, the CHS golf team took home the MIAA Division 2 Fall Golf Championship at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, winning by three strokes with a combined team score of 324 — an average of 81 per golfer on the par-71 course. This championship marks the first in the program’s decorated history. The Bulldogs were led by Chase Thomas, who tied for eighth overall with a 5-over 76, followed by Mason Wachtendonk (T-12, 79), Teddy Shuman (T-38, 84) and Harrison Weitz (T-47, 85).

Division 2 State Champion Boys Hockey Team: On March 15, 2026, the CHS boys ice hockey team clinched the Division 2 state championship, capping off a 24-1-0 season with a 2-1 victory over Tewksbury. This marked their first state title since 2023 and fifth overall in program history. The team was led by a veteran core of student-athletes and their head coach, Brian Shuman, who announced his retirement after 21 seasons with the varsity club.

Division 3 State Champion Girls Outdoor Track Team: On May 31, 2026, the CHS girls outdoor track team captured the MIAA Division 3 State Championship at Merrimack College — the first in the history of the girls track program. The team was led by Lauren Raffetto, who captured gold in both the 800 meters (2:13.69) and mile (5:03.54); Chloe Dubuisson, who won the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.9) and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles; and Adileh Azar, who won the two-mile (11:15.29) and finished third in the mile. The Bulldogs also prevailed in the 4×400 relay behind Azar, Dubuisson, Raffetto and Grace Martinek.
