MacEachern tosses no-hitter as CHS softball reaches .500

By

Buoyed by a no-hit gem from junior Reilly MacEachern and another strong pitching performance by freshman Anna Howe, the CHS varsity softball team strung together back-to-back wins last week to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season at 3-3 overall.

The first of their two recent victories came last Wednesday at Milford as MacEachern completely shut down the Hawks hitters in a career-best performance, allowing zero hits and zero runs through seven innings while striking out 11 batters.

“Reilly did a great job pitching. In fact, she was fantastic,” said head coach Heather Poliferno. “She was nearly flawless. She had good control of the plate, good energy and mechanics, and worked well with her catcher, Fiona Trendell, who called a good game.”

MacEachern’s no-hitter was the first thrown by a Bulldog pitcher in the last few years and was aided by a productive Canton offense that put up runs in four of seven innings.

Powering the Bulldogs’ attack was sophomore infielder Delaney Clegg, who drove in a team-high three runs with a double. Senior Keira Yu added two hits for the visitors, while sophomore Rori Sasin and senior Caitlyn Reynolds each recorded a double.

In their next game against nonleague Durfee just a day later, the Bulldogs continued their hot-hitting ways as they racked up a season-high 13 runs in just four innings, with the game called after the top of the fifth due to the slaughter rule.

Howe drew the start for the hosts and pitched all five innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out six to notch her first varsity win as a pitcher.

Reynolds paced the offense with two hits and a team-leading four runs batted in, while Trendell finished a triple shy of the cycle, hitting an inside-the-park homerun to go along with a double and a single. Also driving in runs for the Bulldogs were freshman Lauren Chiulli (2), senior Abby Stock, and sophomore Parker Marcelonis. Senior Emerson Martin also contributed to the win with some strong defensive plays at second base.

Since dropping their first two games of the season by a combined margin of 24-2, the Bulldogs have responded by winning three of four while outscoring their opponents 31-11. Their only loss in that span came against a solid North Attleboro team by a single run, 7-6.

Poliferno said the progress shown by the team since the beginning of the season has been nothing short of amazing. “They are putting in the effort, and they come here ready to win,” she said.

Now in the thick of the Davenport Division race along with several other teams, the Bulldogs were due to host a 3-2 Oliver Ames team on Monday with another tough test looming on Wednesday at home against undefeated Taunton — the reigning five-time Division 1 state champs.

The Canton girls will then visit nonleague Rockland on Thursday (today) before taking a mid-season break for April school vacation week.
