Commercial property damaged in MV collision
By Mike BergerOn Thursday, March 19, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Canton firefighters responded to a 911 call for a vehicle collision in front of a commercial property at 100 Washington Street, between Marathon Physical Therapy and Wild Duck Wine & Spirits. Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said the vehicle had stuck a support column but stopped short of striking the building.
Because of the damage to the overhanging canopy, firefighters called for the Norfolk County Tech Trailer, which is housed in Canton and contained all of the equipment needed to shore up the building and safely remove the vehicle. Fire Chief Wendell Robery and Building Commissioner Ed Walsh also responded and remained on scene while a private company finished securing and boarding up the building. “Fortunately, there were no pedestrians at the time, or it could have been a different story,” said Hutchinson.
Police Lt. Charles Rae said the operator of the vehicle had suffered a medical episode and lost control of the vehicle. The individual suffered minor injuries and was transported by Canton paramedics to an area hospital.
Earlier that same day, the Fire Department handled three medical calls in a span of just 20 minutes, necessitating a mutual aid call to Randolph to request an additional ambulance. Off-duty Canton firefighters were also called in to provide station coverage at CFD headquarters on Revere Street.
