News Notes: Transfusion team helps save bus crash victim
By Jay TurnerThanks to the quick thinking and expertise of neighboring firefighters/paramedics from Norwood and Canton, a 35-year-old Newton woman is on the road to recovery after being struck by an MBTA bus in downtown Norwood earlier this week.
The accident occurred around 3:50 p.m. on Monday, March 2, across from Norwood Town Hall in front of the Norwood Common.
According to Canton Fire Lt. John Hutchinson, Norwood firefighters were able to quickly extricate the woman by “wisely using the bus’s own airbag system,” which is used for raising and lowering the bus for accessibility. They also contacted Canton Fire to request the department’s Field Transfusion Unit, and a crew of CFD paramedics were able to intercept the ambulance at the Norwood Fire station.
After boarding the ambulance, the transfusion team administered one unit of whole blood to the patient, who suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Boston trauma center. According to Transit Police, the victim was alert and conscious while en route to the hospital and was reportedly in stable condition as of Monday evening.
“No doubt that the quick thinking of Norwood firefighters and the administration of whole blood by Canton paramedics likely increased her chance of survival,” said Lt. Hutchinson.
DPW promotes free Recycle Coach app
As part of its new public information campaign, “Recycle Right, Canton,” the Department of Public Works is encouraging town residents to download the Recycle Coach app on their phones to make recycling information more accessible and easier to find. With the Recycle Coach app, residents can view their trash and recycling collection schedule; get reminder notifications sent directly to their phone; search items to find out what can go in their recycle bins; and access recycling tips and educational materials. The app is free to download and easy to set up. To get the Recycle Coach app, residents can either scan the QR code posted on the town Facebook page or search “Recycle Coach” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
