Canton’s Lisa Lopez, Mike Loughran both running for state representative
By Jay TurnerSeven years after squaring off in one of the town of Canton’s closest-ever political races, former Select Board colleagues Lisa Lopez and Mike Loughran are again vying for the same office — this time with a seat on Beacon Hill on the line.
Earlier this week, both Lopez and Loughran announced that they would be seeking the Democratic nomination for state representative in the 6th Norfolk District, which covers the towns of Canton, Avon, and part of Stoughton (precincts 1, 2A, 4A, 5, 7 and 8). The announcements come on the heels of veteran state Rep. Bill Galvin’s decision not to seek reelection this November after serving in the role for the past quarter century.
In 2019, both Lopez and Loughran ran for a two-year vacancy on the Canton Select Board with Loughran winning by a single vote, 1,033 to 1,032, touching off a recount that also ended in Loughran’s favor by a three-vote margin.
The following spring, Lopez again ran for a Select Board seat and ultimately prevailed after a second consecutive recount over then-incumbent Tom Theodore.
Lopez would go on to serve for a three-year term on the board while Loughran was reelected in both 2021 and 2024. Loughran’s current term on the Select Board expires in 2027.
As both individuals are seeking the Democratic nomination for state rep., they will appear alongside one another on the Democratic State Primary ballot on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The winner of that election will then move on to the general election on Tuesday, November 3.
