Trio of Bulldog wrestlers claim sectional titles
By Jay TurnerIn a historic showing at last week’s Division 2 Central meet at Wayland High School, three different CHS wrestlers made it all the way through their weight class brackets unscathed to be crowned sectional champions.
For all three Bulldogs — sophomore Calvin Quinn, junior Matt Morin and senior Owen Sasin — it marked a new career high point after the trio placed fourth, third and third, respectively, at last year’s D2 central meet. With this year’s trio of gold medal-winning performances, Canton not only tied eventual champion Milford for the most among the 12 competing schools; it also equaled a program record for most sectional titles in a season set by the 2010 CHS squad.
For Quinn, last Thursday’s victory represented his second at a major tournament in a span of just two weeks, following his first-place finish in the 106-pound class at the Hockomock League Championships. And he was every bit as dominant at sectionals — pinning all three opponents he faced in under 40 seconds.
“Calvin set the standard for how a top seed should compete,” noted head coach Nick Matt. “He controlled positions and didn’t allow space. His demeanor under pressure is one of his biggest strengths. For a sophomore, that level of composure is rare.”
In the 144-pound division, Morin also had himself quite a day as he not only went unbeaten in four matches, but also recorded his 100th career victory with a first-period pin in the semifinal round over a highly ranked opponent from Milford, avenging an earlier season loss at the Milford Invitational. He then capped off his performance with a 4-2 win over top-seeded Abdullah Peterson of North Attleboro, who had beaten him in two prior matches this season.
“He didn’t try to win the match in the first exchange,” said Coach Matt. “He stayed disciplined in his positions and trusted his preparation. That’s what wins in February.”
As for Sasin, he too went unbeaten in four straight matches to claim the 215-pound title, and all of his victories were of the no-doubt variety, culminating with a first-period pin in the final over Maximus Daniels of Tri-County. Sasin’s first two victories of the meet also came by pinfall, and he was equally as dominant in his semifinal match, winning by a 13-1 major decision.
“It’s rewarding to see four years of steady work show up at this stage,” Matt said of Sasin, who has now won 19 of his last 20 matches. “He earned the right to control the mat the way he did.”
Besides the three sectional title winners, the Bulldogs also had four other wrestlers reach the podium at the tournament, led by sophomore Matt Maguire, who went 3-2 to finish fourth in the 113-pound class and punch his ticket to the upcoming D2 state meet.
Also earning a spot as alternates at states were Connor Hanlon (138 lbs.) and Tiernan Ritson (175 lbs.), who both finished fifth in their respective weight classes. Nate Toussaint took sixth at 285 pounds to round out the place-winners for the Bulldogs.
As a team, Canton finished the day with 124 points — good for sixth place in the standings and just seven points behind fourth-place Ashland.
“We’re not peaking as a program yet,” said Matt. “We’re building toward it. And with the lineup we have coming back next year, this is just another step.”
