When the dust settled, the CHS girls team came away with a fourth-place finish out of 12 teams while the boys team took sixth — their best finish in six years.
Leading the way with a whopping 21 points on the day was Dubuisson, who not only bested the field in the 55-meter hurdles but also shined in her other two events — placing third in the 300m with a school-record time of 41.55 seconds and fourth in the shot put with a best throw of 30 feet, 11.5 inches.
In the hurdles, Dubuisson was the only competitor to clear nine seconds, and she took it up another notch in the final, setting a new school record with a blazing-fast time of 8.64 seconds.
Other standouts for the Canton girls included Nora Giannacopoulos, who finished fourth in the 1,000m and helped power the Bulldogs to a silver medal in the 4×800 relay along with teammates Lexi Piazza, Maddie Driscoll and Izzy Holland.
Also reaching the podium at Thursday’s league championships — and setting new personal bests in the process — were Grace Martinek in the 300m (fifth), Nyomi Faulk in the shot put (fifth); Natalia Mallei in the high jump (sixth); Holland in the two-mile (sixth); and Driscoll in the mile (eighth). Martinek and Mallei would add another medal as part of the 4×200 relay along with Laurisa Sandor and Abbey Francois, placing seventh overall.
More personal bests were earned by Mallei in the 55 hurdles; Francois in the long jump; Grace Starr and Parker Marcelonis in the 55m; Karimi Nyaga and Tabitha McCready in the 600m; Katherine Dervan in the 1,000m; Elena Silva in the two-mile; and Reilly MacEachern in the shot put.
On the boys’ side, Saint-Vil was the headliner for an impressive Bulldog squad, leaping to the gold in the high jump with a career-best mark of 6’2” and adding another PR in the 55-meter dash to finish ninth overall. He added another podium finish as a member of the 4×200 relay, teaming with John Martinek, Angel Assad and Sony Chery to finish seventh with a season-best time of 1:35.49.
Also coming away with multiple medals at the meet for Canton was sophomore standout Tristan Grant, who raced his way to a silver in the 1,000m and then teamed with Riley Swearingen, Minh Hong and Sam Siegal to set a new season best in the 4×800, placing fourth overall.
Assad would add a fifth-place medal in the high jump, while John Martinek raced his way to an eighth-place finish in the 55 hurdles, setting a new personal best in the preliminary heat with a time of 8.37.
Rounding out the place-winners for the Bulldogs was the 4×400 team of Dalton Wong, Morell Mondesir, Declan Monahan and Tommy Oliver, who took sixth overall.
“I am beyond impressed by this team’s performance,” said boys head coach Brian Gotsell. “We walked away with numerous season bests, several podium finishes, and a league champion. But the real story is our resilience. Even after some tough early season losses, this squad never gave up and gave us our best finish in six years. I couldn’t be prouder of this group.”
With the regular season now in the books, the Bulldogs are busy preparing for the Division 3 Championships, which gets underway this afternoon at the Track at New Balance. Both teams will have representatives in all three relay events plus several individual qualifiers
Qualifiers for the boys team include Saint Vil and Assad in the high jump, Martinek in the 55 hurdles, Monahan in the 600, Grant in the 1,000-meter, and all three relay teams. The girls will also have representatives in all three relays, while Dubuisson enters as the No. 2 seed in both the 55 hurdles and 300m out of more than 30 competitors. Also set to compete for Canton are freshmen Kate Giannacopoulos and Allison Carty in the 1,000m, Mallei in the 55 hurdles, Grace Martinek in the 300m, Faulk in the shot put, and Natalie Hales in the two-mile.
