Bobcat on the prowl
By Canton CitizenCanton resident Sylvia Ruscito captured the above photo of a bobcat that was spotted recently near the intersection of Farm and Randolph streets.
Easily identified by its ‘bobbed’ tail, the elusive bobcat is the only wild cat species currently found in Massachusetts and is approximately twice the size of a house cat. While more common in the central and western parts of the state, bobcats are well adapted to a wide variety of habitats and have been expanding into southeastern Massachusetts.
They are frequently mistaken for mountain lions/cougars, although the latter species has a long tail and is several times larger — typically 100-150 pounds compared to 15-35 pounds for an average bobcat.
