The Canton community has a new hero to look up to thanks to the bravery and quick thinking of 5-year-old Brendan Walsh.
On October 18, Walsh was outside in his front yard when he witnessed a neighbor injured in a fall. Seeing that the neighbor was in distress and unable to get up, Walsh then ran inside to notify his father, Matt, who called 911. According to Fire Chief Wendell Robery, both Brendan and his dad then went across the street to help the woman and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived.
“This young man demonstrated responsibility and compassion, so we wanted to recognize him for what he did,” said Chief Robery in introducing Canton newest “Junior Firefighter” to the Select Board last week.
Appearing with his family at the start of the meeting, Walsh was met with loud applause as he received a gift bag and a fire helmet from Chief Robery and official citations from the Select Board and both branches of the Massachusetts legislature.
The citation from the Select Board offered its “sincere appreciation” on behalf of all residents of the town, noting that the youngster’s actions were “instrumental in ensuring that help arrived for your neighbor when it was needed the most.”
“We’re proud to have you in our community, and it’s outstanding work you’ve done to help another neighbor,” added Select Board Chair JR McCourt. “Thank you very much.”
In addition to the kind words and tokens of appreciation, Walsh, who attends the PreK program at St. John the Evangelist School, also received a promise from Chief Robery to get a ride to school in a Canton fire truck in the near future.
In a social media post shared the next day, the members of Canton Firefighters IAFF Local 1580 noted that Walsh’s actions are a reminder that “not all heroes wear badges, capes, or have superpowers — sometimes they come in the form of a very smart 5-year-old.”
St. John’s School also gave Walsh a shout-out for his heroic actions and for setting an example for other students to follow. “Thank you, Brendan, for showing us the impact of acts of kindness and bravery!”
