Allen, Patricia L.

By

Patricia “Pat” Leonore Allen, born in Providence, RI, on July 3, 1937, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, in Canton, surrounded by loved ones.

Pat was predeceased by her parents, Mildred and Lawrence, her former husband and father of her children, Newton Allen, and her beloved grand-dog, Kora. She is survived by her children, Gregg (Lucy) Allen of Ruckersville, VA, Kristin (James) Newton of Canton, and Mark (Melinda) Allen of Tacoma, WA. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Eric and Julie Newton, Kayleigh, Sarah, Allie and Molly Allen, and Jared Meyer, in addition to her former daughter-in-law, Susan Pennington, extended family, and friends.

Pat grew up in Providence and attended Classical High School before graduating from Rhode Island College with a Master of Education. She later moved to Syracuse, NY, where she served as a guidance counselor in the Syracuse School District for many years. Pat adored her work, her colleagues, and the many students whose lives she touched — many of whom remained in contact with her long after graduation.

Her heart, however, always belonged to East Matunuck, RI, where she spent every summer beginning in 1970. Pat found joy in the ocean breeze, long days on the beach, and the simple pleasure of reading a good book in the Rhode Island sun. Summers also meant treasured time with her Massachusetts grandchildren, who visited her often at the beach and at her cottage. Also, Pat loved visiting Virginia for week-long stays with her granddaughters, returning home with stories of the hilariously dramatic shenanigans that became a highlight of every trip.

In retirement, Pat devoted her time to volunteering at All Saints Church in Syracuse and making sandwiches at the Samaritan Center, acts of service she held close to her heart. She also loved her weekly trips to the library, reading up to five books a week and spending time with friends while sipping a glass of chardonnay.

In 2020, Pat moved to Cornerstone at Canton, a community that offered the support and closeness to family she needed as she navigated the life changes that came with Alzheimer’s disease. There she met her devoted friend, Robert (“Bob”) Olans, with whom she shared deep affection and companionship until his passing in 2024. Pat was also lovingly cared for by many dedicated caregivers, especially Nicole Nichols, Marva Nichols, and Gail Wilmott, whose compassion and love enriched her final years.

Pat will be remembered for her warmth, sassiness, humor, resilience, and her enduring love for family.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice, the Alzheimer’s Association, or Old Colony Hospice.
