Acclaimed Irish folk singer kicks off U.S. tour in Canton
By Canton CitizenOn Thursday, October 30, acclaimed Irish folk singer Emer Dunne and her talented musicians will perform at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton as Dunne kicks off her debut U.S. tour, bringing her Folk Threads show to the Boston area.
Joined by Eamonn Moran on guitar and Shane Meehan on fiddle, the trio is also scheduled to perform in Springfield, MA, Stamford, CT, Mineola, NY, New Paltz, NY, and Philadelphia, PA — marking an exciting new chapter in a career rooted in musical storytelling, connection and tradition.
With a voice described by RTÉ Radio 1 as “pure and sublime,” Dunne weaves together the well-loved folk ballads and contemporary folk songs from Ireland, Scotland and America. Her performances blend heartfelt interpretations with entertaining warmth and humour, inviting audiences to sing along and to be part of the experience with well-known and timeless folk songs such as “Wild Mountain Thyme” and “Grace” to contemporary up-tempo surprises.
Dunne hails from the small town of Mountmellick in County Laois, at the heart of the Midlands. She grew up in a household steeped in music, storytelling, and Irish heritage and culture. “I was surrounded by music from a young age,” Dunne said. “My grandparents on both sides of the family were singers and musicians — my grandfather in Leitrim played the accordion and my Laois grandfather was a singer and he performed in the Sydney Opera House. It was the type of house where you were encouraged to get up and sing, Irish dance, play the whistle or tell a good tale.”
No stranger to the spotlight, Dunne has performed at major festivals, her own theatre tours across Ireland, and at venues in Europe, Japan and Australia. Alongside her own shows in Ireland, she has also toured for two years with folk icons the Fureys, performing in iconic Irish venues such as Dublin’s Vicar Street and Cork Opera House. She also shared the stage with Phil Coulter, Mick Hanley, the Celtic Tenors, The High Kings and more.
Her album Hourglass topped the Irish charts and drew praise from Hot Press, Irish Music Magazine, and RTÉ National Radio and Television. Supported by Culture Ireland and presented in collaboration with PN Entertainment, this tour is a celebration of folk traditions and shared roots — offering songs and music that connect us across generations and oceans and bringing them directly to American and Irish American communities and their friends and to folk music lovers.
