Weinberg, Maureen

By

Maureen (Creedon) Weinberg, 91, a longtime resident of Canton, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston with her beloved husband, Harry Weinberg, by her side.

Maureen was born in Somerville on February 1, 1934, to John and Helen (Crowley) Creedon, immigrants from County Cork, Ireland. Her father was a decorated soldier with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in World War I. Maureen lived a full and exemplary life characterized by dedication to her family and loved ones, kindness to others, and a deep Catholic faith. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and the many contributions of Irish immigrants to this country.

Earlier this year, Maureen celebrated 60 years of marriage to Harry, who was her devoted caretaker and protector in recent years as she battled dementia. At Harry’s side, Maureen created a life filled to the brim with love and respect. She was a loving and nurturing mother to Elisabeth Tavárez and her husband, David, of Rhinebeck, NY, and a doting grandmother to Eva Tavárez. Maureen was inseparable from her cherished siblings, Kathleen (Kaffie) Creedon and Finbar Creedon, who predeceased her, along with her brothers John Creedon and Gerald Creedon and her sisters-in-law Mary Creedon and Eugenia Creedon. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins, and by one brother, Vincent Creedon.

As the middle daughter in an immigrant family of modest means, college was inconceivable. Rather, after graduating from St. John’s High School in North Cambridge, Maureen began working to help support her family, starting her career as a secretary at the Boston Naval Shipyard, where she met Harry, a career naval officer who would retire as a captain. In 1965, interfaith marriages were uncommon, but Maureen and Harry defied convention and built an exceptional life together. (And they said it wouldn’t last!)

They traveled the world as Harry’s career advanced. Before the birth of their daughter, Maureen held various secretarial roles, which included work for the Registrar of Copyrights of the United States in Washington, D.C., and for the Commander of Air Forces Iceland.

Maureen’s most cherished role, however, was that of wife and mother, and she dedicated her life to building a home for Harry and their daughter Elisabeth in Rhode Island, Japan, New Hampshire, California, Virginia, and eventually back home in Massachusetts. Family was at the center of Maureen’s world. A loving and dutiful daughter, she supported her parents through their illnesses and cared for her siblings Kaffie and Finbar in their hour of need. Maureen’s home was a haven for family and friends, who enjoyed her gracious hospitality, witty conversations, and laughter over holiday meals and drinks, often featuring her favorite: a dry Manhattan. She was renowned for her lavish New Year’s Day brunches. Maureen was without peer as a hostess, and her love of entertaining, cooking, and baking created lasting memories. Her generosity extended to canine family members, including rescue dogs Jossie and Shayna, with whom Maureen happily shared many breakfasts.

Maureen’s legacy is one of integrity, kindness, and grace. Her life was a paragon of service and selflessness, whether through her professional work, her unwavering support for her family, or her compassion for others. She leaves behind an adoring family, loving friends and neighbors, and a world made better by her presence. Maureen’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the skilled nursing staff at Orchard Cove in Canton, who took care of her so compassionately for two and a half years.

Visiting hours will be held at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, on Thursday (today) from 4-7 p.m., and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton on Friday, October 10, at 10 a.m. Maureen will be laid to rest with her family members at the New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maureen’s memory may be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation at www.alzinfo.org, Catholic Charities Boston at ccab.org, the New England Center and Home for Veterans at nechv.org, or a charity of your choice.
