Kitchen fire damages downtown Canton restaurant

Emergency crews respond to a fire at Gather restaurant on Washington St.

Gather restaurant in downtown Canton will be closed for the foreseeable future after a fire broke out inside the restaurant’s kitchen last Wednesday afternoon, September 24.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., the Canton Fire Department began receiving multiple 911 calls from witnesses who reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of the building at 635 Washington Street. The restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch, had already closed for the day by the time the fire broke out.

Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said there were occupants inside the building at the time of the fire, but fortunately, “Everyone got out safely with no injuries.”

The responding firefighters entered the front door and stretched a hose line to the rear of the building. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire while containing it to the kitchen area of the restaurant.

Stoughton, Milton and Sharon firefighters also responded to the scene while the Norwood and Randolph fire departments assisted with station coverage.

Hutchinson said there was significant damage to the kitchen and extensive smoke damage throughout the building, which houses several other businesses, including Savoy Salon & Spa and Playa Bowls. Total damages and losses were estimated at $200,000.

An investigation by fire officials determined that the fire was caused by greasy towels, which ignited due to a chemical reaction.

In an update posted on the restaurant’s website, the owners expressed their gratitude that no one was injured but underscored the severity of the damages, noting it would likely take “several weeks (or even months) to rebuild.” They also made a plea for financial support to help with the costs of cleanup, repairs, replacing lost equipment, and supporting restaurant staff. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up for the restaurant, and as of Tuesday they were nearly halfway to their fundraising goal.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your love and support,” stated Gather’s owners, Shelton and Jaime Perkins. “We are determined to rebuild and can’t wait to welcome you back home to Gather.”
