This year’s CHS football team is finding different ways to win, and different players are stepping up when needed.

In last Friday’s 13-0 victory over nonleague Bedford — its third in a row to open the season — concerns were raised when Nick Crowe, one of the team’s top all-around players, had to be assisted off the field with a leg injury. A few series later, Crowe re-entered the game and played a few series at running back, but head coach Anthony Fallon decided to limit him to his defensive role as a linebacker. Not only did he finish as one of the leading tacklers (6); he also intercepted a pass to snuff out a Buccaneer rally.

Crowe was chosen to wear the No. 20 jersey as this year’s recipient of the Billy Cravens Award, an honor bestowed annually during the Bulldogs’ first home game to recognize a team-first player who embodies the qualities exhibited by Cravens, a 1976 CHS graduate and former standout football player who later worked for the town. Fallon said the effort put forth by Crowe after returning to the game was amazing. He said Crowe is a tremendous two-way player who has the “heart of a lion.”

In his place on offense, junior Brody Baldiga gained over 80 yards on the ground and scored a one-yard touchdown.

Senior Brian MacGilvary continued managing the game effectively in place of starting quarterback JT Norton, who is still out with an illness. MacGilvary connected on six of nine pass attempts for 75 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown strike to Jake Marcell.

Defensive lineman Rhancy Jean-Baptiste also continued to impress with six tackles and several quarterback pressures. Additionally, Fallon praised the efforts of the special teams unit, spearheaded by Paul Mellon, for their strong play and sure tackling.

After scoring two touchdowns in the first half, the Bulldogs dominated the clock and tempo with a strong defense and a grinding rushing attack.

In other notes from Billy Cravens Night, Cravens’ wife, Rosie, and family members Jamie and Kim Cravens came out with the team captains for the coin toss, and Jamie sang the National Anthem prior to the game. The Bulldogs, now 3-0, will next take on Holliston (2-1), who is coming off a 34-0 win over Concord-Carlisle. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. tomorrow night at Canton High’s Memorial Field.
