Strike updates from Teamsters & Republic Services
By Jay TurnerTeamsters vote to reaffirm strike
With the labor dispute against waste management company Republic Services reaching the one-month mark and no progress made to date in negotiations, members of Teamsters Local 25 voted overwhelmingly in support of continuing the work stoppage with 93 percent of employees preferring to stay on strike while rejecting the company’s latest offer.
According to Teamsters Local 25 President Tom Mari, “Republic has refused to meet with us for more than 15 days and is disrespecting all of you because they refuse to bring your wages and benefits up to the standards that we established with [competitors] Capitol and Star.”
Mari noted that an even larger percentage of employees voted to continue the strike on Sunday than who voted to initiate the strike on July 1.
“Maybe now the company will realize that it’s not just the negotiating committee making these proposals for better wages and more comprehensive health insurance,” he said. “As I promised the employees, Local 25 will continue the strike until Republic matches what our members already enjoy with Capitol and Star.”
Republic Services decries ‘unlawful conduct’
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the dispute, Republic Services released a statement expressing its empathy for all of the customers and communities affected by the Teamsters strike. “We are working hard to continue providing service, and our collection operations continue to improve,” the company said. Republic went on to say that they have the capability to service all of their customers in greater Boston but continue to be hampered by the Teamsters’ “unlawful blocking” of their trash trucks. The company also shared a video of the alleged illegal conduct. “We prioritize service and the safety of our employees and communities,” stated Republic Services. “Teamsters Local 25 clearly does not share this same commitment. The union’s actions are putting our communities at risk.”
