News Notes: One hospitalized after house fire

A Canton homeowner was transported to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation following a fire that broke out in his basement on Sunday morning, June 15.

Crews arrived at approximately 10 a.m. to find smoke showing from the rear of the house on Talbot Road. Firefighters entered the walkout basement and extinguished the fire, which caused an estimated $250,000 in damages. The homeowner, who was the lone occupant inside the home, was taken by ambulance to Boston Medical Center – South (formerly Good Samaritan), and no injuries to firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, mostly because of the extensive damage.

The Stoughton and Milton fire departments sent engines to assist at the scene while Norwood firefighters helped provide coverage at Canton Station 1 along with off-duty Canton firefighters. The scene was cleared at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Fire Lt. John Hutchinson advised residents to exit the premises immediately and call 911 if a fire is observed or suspected. “Never re-enter the home or try to extinguish a fire on your own,” he said. “A fire doubles in size every 30 seconds.”

GMS preliminary construction underway

In a letter sent to families and staff, Canton Superintendent of Schools announced that preliminary work on the Galvin Middle School building project was scheduled to commence on Monday, June 23, with the clearing of trees and moving of earth on the section of land between Raven Road and the GMS building. Folan said that work is expected to take a week to complete. Construction will then pause for a week for Kids Camp (July 7-11), with work slated to resume on Monday, July 14, and continue through August. Folan said the main goal of this summer’s preliminary work is to build an access road that goes around the current GMS.
