Several CHS track athletes are headed to the MIAA Meet of Champions this weekend after a sensational performance by the Bulldogs at the Division 3 Championships.
The girls team, led by junior Chloe Dubuisson, had its best showing in over a decade, finishing sixth overall in a deep field of teams. The Canton boys also impressed as they had several podium finishers and placed 21st as a team — their highest finish in recent memory.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how we competed today,” said boys head coach Brian Gotsell. “We peaked at the right time, and it was a great way to cap off the season for most of our athletes. The future is bright, and we can definitely build off today for next year.”
“We have worked all season to be our best at championship season and our athletes bought into that wholeheartedly,” added girls coach Anna Amico. “This progress and growth were on full display Friday and Sunday.”
Dubuisson was the top point scorer for the Bulldogs as she raced her way to a division title in the 400-meter hurdles while adding a silver in the 100 hurdles and a bronze as part of the 4×400 relay.
In the 400 hurdles, Amico said Dubuisson ran an aggressive race, driving through the finish line to edge out the second-place runner with a time of 62.95 seconds. “Her determination, heart, and refusal to lose was on full display,” said the Canton coach. “The time was a second and a half personal best and the third fastest run in Massachusetts this year.”
Dubuisson’s 100 hurdle time of 14.81 seconds was the fifth best in the state so far this season and second best in school history behind CHS track legend Maddie Rousseau.
She then capped off her memorable performance in the 4×400, teaming with Addy Azar, Grace Martinek and Lauren Raffetto to finish third in 4:06.82, which was just off their season-best time.
Also medaling at the divisional meet was teammate Sally Hoban, who finished third overall in the heptathlon. “Five events in one day is no easy feat, and Sally crushed it from start to finish, earning a career best score of 2,490,” said Amico.
Highlighted by personal records in the 100 hurdles and 800m, Hoban added almost 400 points to her score to secure the bronze finish.
Martinek also had a big day for Canton, finishing sixth overall in the triple jump with an eight-inch personal-best while taking ninth in the 100-meter dash. Her relay partner Raffetto also shined, finishing seventh in the 800m and 10th in the mile, while was not too far behind in the mile, finishing 17th with a new personal record.
Other top performers included the girls 4×800 team of Sofia Anastasio, Elena Silva, Izzy Holland and Lexi Piazza, who finished ninth, and Sophie Regan, who placed 21st in the shot put. Also in the 400 hurdles, senior Lily Duong ended her career with a PR finish, and Natalia Mallei ran a strong race as well.
On the boys’ side, Kareem Chaplin II bettered his school record for the second consecutive week in the 100m, finishing the preliminaries in 10.81 seconds. In the finals, Chaplin was hot right out of the gun and sprinted to a third-place finish (10.82). JJ Faulk also landed on the podium with a sixth-place finish (11.09), and he also jumped to a career best in the long jump (22’4.75”) to better his school record and finish ninth overall.
Chaplin continued his career day with a personal best in the same event to place 19th.
In the 400 hurdles, Casey Lee entered as the No. 21 seed but ran a smart and strategic race to improve his season best by over two seconds and finish 11th overall. The mark places him fifth all time in school history. Lee also had a great showing in the 110 hurdles to finish 11th.
On Sunday, the meet started with Angel Assad and Josh Saint Vil competing in high jump. Building off a strong finish at the league championship, Saint Vil continued to impress, leaping to a personal best of 6 feet and a seventh-place finish with Assad taking 24th place.
The relays, which have been a bright spot for the Bulldogs this season, continued to shine with the 4×100 of Hanlon, Zach Sanon, Chaplin, and Faulk nabbing sixth place and the 4×800 team of Riley Swearingen, Sam Siegal, Pranav Addanki and Minh Hong placing 12th. The 4×400 squad of Dalton Wong, John Martinek, Declan Monahan and Lee finished 16th.
Representing the Bulldogs at the MIAA Meet of Champions will be Chaplin and Faulk for the boys and Dubuisson, Raffetto, and the 4×400 relay for the girls.
