Knoll, James J.
By Canton CitizenJames J. Knoll, 82, a cherished family man and esteemed electrical engineer, passed away peacefully at Milton Hospital on April 11, 2025. Born on February 16, 1943, in Dorchester, James was known for his warm heart, sharp mind, and generous spirit.
Raised in Quincy, Jim attended Quincy High School. He went on to continue his education at Northeastern University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. His dedication to his studies was only matched by his commitment to his community, a trait that remained a constant throughout his life.
After graduating, Jim began a fulfilling career at Raytheon, where he worked for many years. His contributions as an electrical engineer were significant, and his colleagues respected him for his innovative solutions and unwavering work ethic. Jim was not only a skilled professional but also a mentor to many young engineers who would seek his wisdom and guidance.
Jim’s love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was the beloved husband and dance partner of Susan K. Knoll (nee Keating), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and laughter. He was a devoted father to his children, Anton Knoll-Ruffo of Murrells Inlet, SC, Kristin Neal of Northfield, and Jennifer DeCesare of Pembroke. His role as a parent was one he took great pride in, always providing support and encouragement to his children in all their endeavors.
He was a loving brother to Mary Ann Panaro of Quincy and was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Arthur Knoll. His family extended to his cherished grandchildren, AJ, Nick, Tessa and Dylan, who brought him immense joy and with whom he shared many happy memories, and his nieces and nephews, who he always enjoyed being with.
Outside of his professional and family life, Jim was an active member of the Quincy Elks. His involvement in the organization reflected his love for his community and his desire to give back. Jim also had a passion for dance, particularly square and round dancing. It was an activity that allowed him to express his joy for life and connect with others who shared his enthusiasm. He also enjoyed cross country skiing, bike riding, and traveling to beautiful and interesting places.
Jim’s remarkable life was marked by his dedication to his family, his profession, and his community. His presence was a source of stability and comfort to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, integrity, and devotion will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
As we bid farewell to James J. Knoll, we celebrate a life well-lived — a life full of purpose, connection, and love. His memory will be held dear in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous soul.
