The state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) invites the public to come celebrate the new year with a First Day Hike through the Blue Hills Reservation.

Activities get underway at 11 a.m. at Houghton’s Pond, where participants can watch a live wildlife demonstration presented by the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, gather around a warming fire and share some New Year’s cheer. Please consider bringing a nonperishable food item for Interfaith Social Services.

Starting at 12 p.m., DCR staff will lead two easy to moderate hikes in the Blue Hills lasting between one and two hours. There is also one self-guided option. Choose the hike to suit your interests and ability. Dress warmly and wear sturdy hiking boots for all hikes.

Houghton’s Pond is located at 840 Hillside Street in Milton. Parking is limited so participants are advised to arrive early.

For more information or inclement weather updates, call the DCR Blue Hills office at 617-698-1802 ext. 4.
