Town to acquire Revere Heritage unit and parking space

By

The Canton Select Board has approved plans by the town’s Affordable Housing Trust to acquire one housing unit and parking space at the Paul Revere Heritage Site and sell the assets to support the town’s affordable housing goals.

Canton Holdings had held one space for the town since the property’s construction. The developer will sell the housing unit to the town for $1, and the Select Board approved using $10,000 in mitigation funds to purchase the parking space.

The unit, located at 50 Coppersmith Way, is currently valued at $690,000 and will be marketed and advertised soon. Select Board member Mike Loughran, who also serves on the Housing Trust, said proceeds from the sale of the unit will go toward providing more affordable housing while funds from the sale of the parking space will be returned to the mitigation account. The Select Board approved the proposal in a 5-0 vote.

Also at the November 7 meeting, it was announced the Revere & Son Heritage Trust Corporation is applying for $200,000 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funding to support the construction of an outdoor pavilion at the Paul Revere Heritage Site.

George Comeau, representing the trust, presented the plan to the Select Board Tuesday night. The proposed open-air pavilion would be located in the area of the original barn foundation and would span roughly 2,000 square feet while providing seating for around 100 people. Comeau said it will allow for increased opportunities to host recreational, educational, and cultural events and will provide shade and weather protection for visitors to the site. The trust plans to contribute $50,000 for design, documentation and permitting costs and is seeking the CPA grant to cover construction costs. If approved by the Community Preservation Committee, Zoning Board of Appeals, and eventually voters at Annual Town Meeting, work on the project would begin in July 2024 and be completed in August.

In other news from Tuesday night’s meeting:
