Girls volleyball team continues unbeaten streak

Through 11 matches, the Canton High girls volleyball team’s season-long winning streak remains intact after another stellar showing last week in victories over Foxboro, King Philip Regional, and nonleague Westwood.

As of Tuesday, the Bulldogs were ranked third overall in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings and were comfortably ahead of the pack in the Hockomock Davenport Division as they pass the halfway mark of the regular season.

Last week’s three wins all came in straight sets and were never in doubt, aided by a strong defense and an efficient offense.

Senior captain Jess Wright continued her excellent all-around play with big stat lines in all three contests, including 16 kills, 14 digs and an ace against Division 1 King Philip.

Sophomore setter Erin Bigham also shined as the quarterback of the offense while Fatima Sidibay, Kaitlin Bigham and Sally Hoban each chipped in with key kills.

On defense, the Bulldogs were sharp as usual, anchored by the standout duo of freshman Soley Rodriguez Martinez and Zoe Scibelli.

Including last week’s matches, the Bulldogs have now combined to win 35 of 36 individual sets this season—most by a wide margin—with their only set loss coming in a 3-1 victory over Davenport rival Oliver Ames.

The Canton girls could well be tested this week, however, as they head to Attleboro Thursday for a tough road challenge against the Bombardiers, the ninth ranked team in Division 1. The team will then play four in a row at home, starting with Division 1’s 12th ranked team, Bishop Feehan, tomorrow night and ending next Friday with a rematch against OA.

In between, the girls will host Sharon on October 16 and Stoughton on October 18, with the latter game also doubling as a fundraiser to support a GMS student in her fight against a brain AVM and pediatric stroke.

All are welcome to stop by the CHS gym that night at 6 p.m. to purchase a raffle ticket and a sweet treat, make a donation, and cheer on the Bulldogs as they take on the Black Knights.
