Library preps for busy Sept.; book donations needed

The Canton Public Library invites has a busy month ahead with several exciting events planned.

On Monday, September 11, at 7 p.m., the library will welcome author Jeff Romano for a talk about day-hiking opportunities in New England. A lifelong New Englander who has been hiking for over five decades, Romano will cover destinations in all six states with a focus on itineraries featured in his latest guidebook, the 2023 edition of 100 Classic Hikes: New England. He will also be sharing advice, providing insights, and answering questions on how and where to plan your next hiking adventure.

The presentation will also include information on New England wildflowers, birds, wildlife, history, and conservation success stories. After the presentation, Romano’s publications will be available for sale, including Hike the Park Acadia, Day Hiking New England, the first edition of 100 Classic Hikes: New England, and Best Loop Hikes: New Hampshire’s White Mountains to the Maine Coast.

On Wednesday, September 20, at 7 p.m., the library will host another fascinating presentation — this one by the Gravestone Girls about New England cemetery art, history, and symbolism. The “tour,” called “Welcome to the Graveyard,” will take visitors from colonial burial grounds through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st-century locations. The girls will discuss why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do, and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years.

Prior to the program date, the girls will take pictures of Canton’s cemeteries to discuss during the presentation. Questions are welcome at the end of the show, and the program is free and open to the public. For more information about the Gravestone Girls, visit gravestonegirls.com.

Lastly, on Tuesday, September 26, at 7 p.m., the library will celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop with local author Jonathan Mael as he discusses his debut book, Harlem World: How Hip Hop’s Super Showdown Changed Music Forever. The story of the early days of the genre in Harlem and the Bronx is seen through the eyes of two of the biggest underground crews of all time. Harlem World is an exciting dueling biography leading up to one of the most significant rap battles of all time on July 3, 1981.

Mael is a high school teacher and reporter who has written for the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, and ESPN. After the program, copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing by the author.

All of these programs will be held in the Community Room and are free and open to the public. They are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Canton Public Library. For more information, please contact Carolyn Elkort, outreach librarian, at 781-821-5027 or visit library.canton.ma.us.

Book donations now being accepted

The Friends of the Canton Public Library will be holding several book sales later this year and need donations now to prepare for these events and to stock our “Everyday Book Sale” shelves. The Friends greatly appreciate your donations, especially of “gently” used children’s books, newer adult fiction and nonfiction books, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs. (Please, no textbooks, encyclopedias, VHS, old or damaged books.)

Donations are accepted in the designated corner of the Everyday Book Sale Room around the corner from the circulation desk on Fridays and Saturdays only. Donations are not to be placed at the circulation desk. Look for the “Donate Books Here” sign!

All proceeds from the Friends’ book sales directly benefit the Canton Public Library.
