Cheryl (Sommer) O’Brien, 56, passed on August 1, 2023, following a lengthy illness caused by complications from PXE.

She is survived by her husband, James W. O’Brien, of Marshfield, her son, Cameron M. O’Brien, of Hingham, and her daughter, Jessie S. O’Brien, of Marshfield.

She was predeceased by her father, Dr. Robert F. Sommer, of Hingham and is survived by her mother, Marie Disco Sommer, of Hingham; her sister Susan Sommer and her husband, Dr. Richard B. Smith, and their children Brian and Rebecca of Hingham; her sister Dianne Sommer and her husband, Gerard Spiniello, and their children Sam, Rome and Ava of Canton; her aunt Barbara Dewey Sommer of Syracuse, NY; and her uncle Nelson R. Disco of Merrimack, NH.

She is also survived by four brothers and three sisters-in-law: Rick and Jeannie and their children Jillian, Derek and Travis of Martinsburg, WV, John and Florence and their children Jack, Thomas and Connor of Canton, Tom of East Boston, Robert and Kelly and their children Cory and Kimberly of Columbia, KY, Teri Leary and her children Jamie, Michael and Shana of Carver, Rita and Mark Atkins and their children Ashley, Courtney, Brianna, Matthew and Lindsey of Raleigh, NC, and Edith O’Brien of Spring Branch, TX. She is also survived by 11 cousins.

Cheryl was born in Fort Rucker, Alabama, while her father was serving as a physician in Vietnam. The family moved to Hingham in 1967 when Cheryl was six months old and she graduated from Hingham High School in 1985. She then graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey in 1989 with a degree in English.

Prior to leaving the workforce to raise her family, Cheryl was a graphic designer for the Mariner newspapers in Marshfield.

Cheryl’s favorite activities included walking daily on Rexhame Beach, gardening, singing, cooking, and watching Boston sports events with James. She had an immense love for the Harry Potter franchise and loved animals, including her cat, Tika.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, August 9, in St. Ann by the Sea Parish Church in Marshfield, followed by interment in the Couch Cemetery.
