Canton High students team up for Relay for Life

The CHS Relay for Life team earned a Platinum distinction for their fundraising efforts.

A team of Canton High School students from Ed Amico’s career planning class had a night to remember as participants in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Charles River held May 20-21 at Newman Elementary School in Needham.

The CHS team, co-captained by juniors Mercia Kolokithas and Abby Silvasy, raised over $9,000 — the highest total among the 16 teams participating — to directly support breakthrough research, 24/7 support for cancer patients, access to lifesaving screenings, and much more.

The overnight fundraising walk began on a Saturday at 2 p.m. with a memorable survivors’ lap and continued throughout the evening and into Sunday morning.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Kolokithas. “It was so special to see months of planning finally come together into one memorable event. Cheering on the cancer survivors during the first lap of the night and seeing the joy in their faces is something I will never forget.”

Both Kolokithas and Silvasy said they were incredibly proud of their team and thrilled to be able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.

“Being able to see so many survivors and caregivers tell their stories throughout the event was so inspirational and made a profound impact on me and the entire team,” added Silvasy. “I would like to thank Mr. Amico for introducing this fundraiser to his career planning classes.”

Fellow classmate and relay team member Olivia Hickey said she relished the opportunity to raise both money and awareness for those battling cancer while also honoring loved ones. “I loved being able to connect with the other people there and it was overall so beyond fun,” she said.

While the career planning course at CHS focuses on career, college and post-secondary exploration and building skills such as resume writing, interviews, public speaking and more, Amico noted that caring for others is another major point of emphasis.

“It’s one of our three main items that is on the board every day,” he said. “Being able to make a difference in the world around you and in people’s lives is a skill that will last with them forever. The students are an incredible group of young adults and it’s an honor and privilege to be their teacher every day.”
