Body of swimmer recovered from Ponkapoag Pond

A water rescue effort at Ponkapoag Pond in Canton ended tragically on Saturday after the victim, a 62-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at Milton Hospital.

The woman, who was last seen swimming by the Appalachian Mountain Club cabins, was reported missing at approximately 7 p.m., and firefighters and paramedics launched two search boats from Fisherman’s Beach. Rescuers were able to recover the victim from the water but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. The Mass. State Police are investigating the incident.

Motorist injured in rollover crash on Washington St.

On Thursday afternoon, June 1, at 4:50 p.m., Canton firefighters responded to a single-car rollover accident at 187 Washington Street. Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said an SUV with one occupant left the road, struck a tree, and rolled over into Washington Street. The driver was able to self-extricate and was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Police officers responded to the scene to assist with traffic, which had backed up significantly through Canton Center as well as Cobb’s Corner. One lane was closed, and traffic was diverted down Dunbar Street. Engine 3 remained on scene while Interstate Wrecking Service uprighted and removed the vehicle.
