NepRWA launches regional flood project

By

The Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA) has partnered with the town of Dedham, Weston & Sampson, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), and several other Neponset Watershed communities — including Canton — to undertake a comprehensive planning project for climate impacts.

This collaborative effort aims to develop strategies to mitigate flood risk and facilitate more cooperative planning and implementation of strategies to reduce climate-related public health and safety risks in the region.

As part of this important initiative, the project team invites the public to participate in a virtual public meeting on June 15 starting at 7 p.m. The meeting serves as an opportunity to engage with community members and discuss the plans not only for reducing future flood risk in the region, but also strategies to facilitate regional cooperation. Meeting registration and survey information can be found at neponset.org/ClimateAdapt. Language interpretation services for the meeting will be available with pre-registration by June 8.

“Climate change isn’t a theoretical risk — it’s affecting us right now,” said Kerry Snyder, NepRWA Advocacy Director. “One effect is that more of our rain falls as heavy downpours, which can overwhelm existing municipal stormwater infrastructure. Communities need to know which areas are most vulnerable as those storms become more severe and more frequent.”

The project has been made possible by a Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant awarded to the town of Dedham. Other participating communities include Boston, Canton, Foxborough, Medfield, Milton, Norwood, Quincy, Sharon, Stoughton, Walpole, and Westwood.
