Historical Society to host cookout and celebration

By

The Tilden House is one of the oldest remaining homes in Canton.

The public is invited to attend a cookout and celebration to mark the 125th anniversary of the Canton Historical Society on Sunday, June 11 (rain date June 18) from 1-4 p.m. at the David and Abigail Tilden House, located at 93 Pleasant Street.

There will be refreshments for sale as well as live music, kids’ games, and tours of the newly restored Tilden House — one of the oldest homes in Canton (circa 1725) and among just a handful of First Period houses still standing in Norfolk County.

The focus of an extensive preservation effort spanning several decades, the “Little Red House” at Pequitside Farm is under the long-term care and management of the Historical Society and will be used as both a study house and a venue for special programs and events. More information about the project can be found at tildenhouse.org.

The Canton Historical Society, founded in 1898, is a nonprofit museum and educational institution dedicated to preserving and documenting Canton’s history. The society hosts events throughout the year and houses a large collection of local artifacts dating from the late 1600s to the present day.

Residents can support the Canton Historical Society by making a donation or by joining as a member. For more information, go to cantonhistorical.org, visit the society’s Facebook page at facebook.com/cantonhistorical, or call 781-615-9040.
