Bernard Joseph Couming passed away on May 6, 2023, in Canton. He was born on February 11, 1937, in Worcester to parents Thomas M. Couming and Rita O. Leonard.

Bernard graduated from Boston Technical High School and then graduated from Yale University’s Chinese Linguistics program as part of his training for the U.S. Air Force stationed in Korea. He also graduated from Northeastern University.

Beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Lavin). He will be deeply missed by his children, Ronald Couming of Billerica, Lisa Chandler and husband Charles Chandler of Canton, Alice Caldwell of Maine and Paul Whynot; two granddaughters, Erin and Sarah Chandler; his siblings Rosemary Symes of Dorchester, Peter Couming of Norton, Paul Couming of MN, the late Marian Couming, Tom Couming and Edna Goode; his sisters-in-law Mary Couming of ME, Margaret Miller of OR, and Joann Lavin of NH; brother-in-law Neil Lavin of NH; beloved companion MaryEllen O’Neil; and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard was a lifelong employee of New England Telephone and Telegraph. He was also a professional genealogist and former president of TIARA.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday (today) at 10 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery. Arrangements by the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street.
