Comeau to seek re-election to Library Board of Trustees

Submitted by George Comeau

I am announcing my campaign for re-election as a trustee of the Canton Public Library. The American ideal of the public library is core to my values and the promotion of freedom and access to information. I am proud of my tenure as a trustee over the past 24 years. Serving as an elected official in my hometown and being a public servant is a high point in my life.

My record includes serving as the Building Renovation chairperson during which I oversaw the $13.5 million expansion and historic renovation of the landmark building. In 2002 I was privileged to receive the Massachusetts Trustee of the Year Award. In 2017 it was my honor to be named Canton’s Person of the Year by the Blue Hill Civic Association. Much of my recognition stemmed from my work as a public servant. As the library looks toward the next century of service, there will be new challenges for the building and our programs. I know that I can continue to serve my neighbors throughout the community with passion and zeal.

Over the last 18 years, I have served under three Massachusetts governors as a state commissioner of public libraries. I was first appointed to the Mass. Board of Library Commissioners by Governor Mitt Romney in 2004 and reappointed by Governor Deval Patrick in 2007 and again in 2013. I was proud to serve as board chairman during FY09 and FY10. In 2021, Governor Charlie Baker appointed me to a new term as a commissioner. It is from the wide-ranging role of overseeing libraries across the commonwealth that I bring enhanced experience to the people of Canton.

My career is rooted in the public administration sector. Highlights of my career include marketing and communications, legal services, and event management. I graduated from Canton High School and received a superb public education. I am proud of my three advanced degrees from Suffolk University in Boston. Here in Canton, my passion has been history and the rich heritage of our town. To date, I have authored close to 250 stories that delve into the people and places of historic note. The library has always held a special place in my heart and soul and is the institution that has had the greatest impact upon my life and who I am as a person.

I believe that any aspirant to this office should be willing to submit to the voters his or her views, record and competence. There are existential threats to freedom of ideas, and the public library is a treasured underpinning of democracy and the values embodied in the Constitutions of the United States and of the commonwealth of Massachusetts. As a trustee, I pledge to continue to support and safeguard our freedoms.

For 41 years, I have been in the service of the people of Canton, and again I humbly ask for your continued support and your vote on April 4. To the voters and people of Canton, I thank you for the opportunity to continue my service.
