News Notes: CFD responds to townhouse fire

A Canton resident and her three children are staying with family in the area after a dryer caught fire on the second floor of their townhouse on Thursday, January 26. Canton firefighters responded to the residence on Turtle Brook Road at approximately 10:30 p.m. and encountered a fire that extended out to the second floor hallway with heavy smoke. Additional Canton firefighters as well as firefighters from Stoughton and Milton assisted at the scene while the Norwood Fire Department provided station coverage.

Fire Chief Wendell Robery, Deputy Chief Scott Johnson, and wire inspectors also responded, and residents of adjoining townhouses were allowed to return to their homes. No injuries were reported and Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said damage was estimated at nearly $50,000.

Canton police probe alleged robbery

Canton police have opened an investigation into an alleged robbery reported by a resident of Knob Hill Circle on Thursday, January 26, at approximately 8 p.m.

Deputy Police Chief Patty Sherrill said the resident had arranged to sell XBox video game controllers through Facebook Marketplace and alleges that four males, possibly teenagers, grabbed the controllers from him and fled without making payment. The six controllers that were taken have an estimated total value of $300.

CPD awarded grants for 911 staffing & training

The Canton Police Department recently received two major grants from the State Telecommunications Board to cover salaries and training for 911 dispatchers. Both grants were written by Police Chief Helena Rafferty and they are renewable annually.

The first grant is for $86,759 and should cover the salaries of 1.5 full-time-equivalent positions. The second grant, totaling $91,239, will pay for education and training for the dispatchers, covering topics such as legal implications, stress management, active shooting, and mental health and wellness.
