Hockey Fights Cancer event returns to Ice House

By

This weekend at the Canton Ice House, the memory of Reo Todesca will be front and center as Xaverian Brothers High School hosts the sixth annual “Hockey Fights Cancer” event to raise funds for cancer prevention, screening, treatments and support.

Reo, a beloved friend to many in the Canton hockey community and mother of Xaverian assistant coach and new Canton Youth Hockey President Paul Todesca, was diagnosed with Stage 3B non-squamous cell lung cancer in May 2017. She was supposed to be in attendance for the inaugural Hockey Fights Cancer event in 2018 but passed away a few weeks earlier. After her passing, the games became a memorial tribute to Reo and all others who have succumbed to this awful disease.

Over the past five years, Hockey Fights Cancer has raised over $250,000 and has established the Reo Todesca Memorial Foundation to honor Reo and keep her memory alive.

This year, the event will stretch over two days and will feature some first-time participants, including the Curry College men’s and women’s teams and the Stoughton High School girls team.

The action kicks off on Friday, February 3, with the Curry College men taking on Salve Regina. Then it’s a full slate on Saturday, February 4, with the Stoughton girls taking on Old Rochester at 1 p.m., Curry College women facing UNE at 3 p.m., Xaverian battling St. John’s Prep at 5:10 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Division 1 state championship, and Westwood facing Medfield at 7:10 p.m. in the nightcap.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and includes a free Hockey Fights Cancer t-shirt. In addition, there will be a silent auction, chuck-a-puck, raffles, and much more. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Reo Todesca Memorial Foundation. So get to Canton on Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, for a weekend of great hockey for a great cause!
