Callaghan, Paul

By

Paul Callaghan, 94, of Canton, passed away January 9 surrounded by his three children.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Allston and graduated from Brighton High School. He was a Merchant Marine at a young age and later joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Paul was a printer for 10 years for Libby Printing and the Boston Globe before becoming a member of the Boston Fire Department, a job he truly loved and held for 37 years, retiring as a deputy chief in 1993.

He was married to his loving late wife, Virginia, for over 70 years. They were each other’s soulmates and best friends. Paul was a devout Catholic and lived in Canton and Florida for the last 48 years. Family was paramount in his life, and one of his greatest joys was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cornerstone at Canton had been his home for the last four years and he enjoyed hanging out in the lobby greeting people as they came to visit their family members. They gave him the honorary title of “associate receptionist” and most people coming in referred to him as “Chief.”

Beloved husband of the late Virginia F. (Lang). Father of Christine O’Halloran of Canton, Cheryl Conroy and her husband, Jim, of Canton, and Paul M. Callaghan and his wife, Susan, of Wakefield. Also survived by seven grandchildren, Andy, Ginny, Jimmy, Patrick, Jessica, Paul and Brian, and seven great-grandchildren, Lexi, Lainey, Colin, Liam, Cal, Carter and Cameron. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish (formerly St. John the Evangelist). Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Saturday prior to the Mass from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the VA National Cemetery in Bourne on Monday promptly at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Food Pantry, 900 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org.
