CHS Drama presents a tale of star-crossed lovers

This will be the first time I’ve seen Romeo and Juliet on stage. I don’t know how in the world that’s possible, but I’ve only seen two of the more than 35 film adaptations that have been made — 1968 with Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, and 1996 with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.

So this is going to be a treat!

And it’s your chance to see it too, as Canton High School’s Drama Club is excited to present the age-old story of star-crossed lovers.

“I’ve wanted to do Romeo and Juliet forever,” said CHS theater director Katherine Brobst. “I love Shakespeare and have seen and done so many of his plays. And in this production, the classic tale gets a modern spin. There is a ton of modern music, fabulous hair and makeup, and a really impressive set. And we of course are keeping the intense sword fighting scenes! Our version is fresh, funny, fast-paced, and full of passion and emotion.”

The run time is about two hours long and the show is rated PG-13.

“It’s amazing how relevant Romeo and Juliet is to today’s world,” noted Brobst. “I want the audience to see themselves in these characters — people just trying to navigate the complicated world they live in, and trying to find connection and acceptance through it all. And I hope people leave the theater being reminded that hatred, fear, and revenge will never heal our communities, but only doom us to repeat traumatic cycles.”

Performances are in the CHS auditorium on Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 20, at 2 p.m. Advance tickets with seat selection are $12 each at showtix4u.com/event-details/68852, or you can purchase best available seats at the door for $15 per person.

Don’t miss your chance to see this modern take on a timeless classic. The set, sound, costumes, props, music, action and the actors — it will all be vibrant on stage, as only live theater can be.
