News Notes: Firefighters battle large brush fires

By

The brush fire burned an acre and a half of land south/southeast of Homestead Drive.

Approximately an acre and a half of land was badly burned and multiple vehicles were lost as Canton firefighters worked for nearly two hours last Thursday to contain a large brush fire that broke out between two neighborhoods on the easterly side of Turnpike Street.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Scott Johnson, the fire began in a heavily wooded area behind a cul-de-sac on Clover Lane and spread northward toward Homestead Drive. Crews from Stoughton and Milton also responded to the scene and they were able to surround the fast-moving fire on three sides and stop it before it reached a shed on Homestead Drive. No houses were damaged, although the fire did manage to consume a truck, boat, boat trailer, and small utility trailer that were being stored on property at 69 Turnpike Street. Johnson said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A few days later, on Sunday, August 21, a crew of Canton firefighters were deployed to Medfield as part of the Norfolk County Forest Fire Strike Team to help battle a large brush fire in the Rocky Woods Reservation. On Monday, crew members returned to the site with a tanker and assisted with water supply and extinguishment operations.

Woman charged in multi-car crash

Canton police officers responded to a hectic scene right outside station headquarters on Saturday morning as an unlicensed motorist veered into oncoming traffic and struck two other cars head-on, causing multiple injuries.

Deputy Chief Patty Sherrill said the driver, a 55-year-old Dorchester woman, and her passenger both sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital along with two bystanders who had helped at the scene and also suffered minor injuries. The driver who initiated the collisions was cited for a marked lanes violation and for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
