Surging A’s outlast Acushnet for third straight win

By

The red-hot Canton A’s made it three wins in a row — and five of their last six — after outlasting the Acushnet Aztecs 12-8 last week to improve to 12-7 overall. The A’s currently sit in fifth place in the Cranberry League standings and entered the week just one point behind the third-place Hock Valley Panthers.

The game against Acushnet featured plenty of offense with no dominant pitching on either side. The A’s jumped out to a 4-0 lead on RBI hits by Jay Wladkowski and Jaydon Ricci, but Acushnet bounced right back, scoring three runs (two unearned) in the bottom half of the first. The A’s Kyle Serec pushed the lead back to four with a three-run homerun over the centerfield fence, and a Braydon Dolbashion single, two stolen bases, and an RBI single by Carr boosted the lead to 9-3 after two innings.

Acushnet would cut the lead to 9-8 after scoring five runs in the third inning, but Canton again responded and went ahead 12-8 on RBIs by Sam Nugent and Jacob Levine. Good relief pitching by Stephen Grenham and Connor McDonald would seal the win for the hosts. Alvero Espinal also made a nice catch in left field to save an extra-base hit.

The A’s were due to visit first-place Braintree on Wednesday and travel to Bellingham tonight to play Hock Valley. Next up is a home doubleheader on Sunday versus the South Shore Diamond Dawgs of Weymouth with games at 1 and 3 p.m. at CHS.
