CHS Class of ’22 athletes honored at senior banquet

The Canton High School Athletics Department celebrated the many accomplishments of the Class of 2022 at its annual senior banquet on the eve of graduation day.

“After holding the ceremony virtually over the past two years, it was awesome to get our varsity head coaches all together to once again honor our graduating student athletes as the finale of the senior banquet,” said CHS AD Danny Erickson. “Thanks to the best coaching staff in the state for taking another night away from your family to come honor our Bulldogs. It was a night full of celebration.”

A total of 134 graduating seniors received varsity letters in each of their sports during the June 2 event.

The following are some of the notable Bulldog highlights from the 2021-22 school year, led by the amazing Class of 2022:

Hock Sportsmanship Award: Boys Hockey, Girls Basketball, Gymnastics (spring awards TBD)

Hockomock Davenport Titles: Golf, Field Hockey, Girls Swimming, Boys Hockey, Girls Hockey (outright Hock champs)

MIAA State Tournament qualifiers: Golf, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Boys Hockey, Girls Hockey, Baseball, Boys Tennis, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Lacrosse, Unified Track and Field

Deep MIAA Tournament Runs:

* State Finalists: Boys Soccer, Boys Hockey, Girls Hockey

* State Runners-Up: Golf

* Elite Eight: Girls Basketball

School Record Holders/Milestones:

* Kiara Cerruti – All-time leading scorer in Girls Basketball with 1,174 points

* Fay Gallery – 1,000-point club in Girls Basketball with 1,022 points

* Favor Ugah – school record (10.8 seconds) and national qualifier in the 100-meter dash

* Kiley Hanlon – tied Maddie Rousseau for the school record (12.4 seconds) in the 100-meter dash

Other notable accomplishments:

* The CHS Cheer team advanced to the Regional competition.

* The Unified Track team had many great performances at the State Championship Meet,

* Individuals on the Cross Country, Gymnastics, and Wrestling teams represented CHS at a very high level.

* Softball, Boys Basketball and Girls Tennis were on the brink of tournament qualification.

The Athletics Department also bid farewell to three key members of its staff, all of whom have made huge contributions during their tenure with the Bulldogs.

* Ryan Gordy, assistant AD and former longtime varsity boys basketball coach, is heading up the road to Oliver Ames to become the Tigers’ new athletic director.

* Dennis Aldrich, Canton’s longtime varsity girls hockey coach, recently announced his retirement after leading his team to a fourth trip to the state championship game.

* Dave Delpico, Canton’s varsity wrestling coach, will be stepping down after guiding the wrestling program through two very challenging, non-traditional seasons during the pandemic.

The following CHS seniors were also honored for exceptional achievement at this year’s banquet:

Decembrele Sportsmanship Cup Winner Kiley Hanlon

Sydney Gallery and Sean Sullivan received the Scott Herr Strength & Conditioning Award, given to two seniors who showed the most dedication to the fitness center, named in honor of the late Scott Herr.

Suraj Ramanathan earned the Sammy Swardlick Spirit Cup, named in honor of the Canton hall of famer and 1936 CHS graduate in recognition of pride in CHS Athletics.

Kyle Downing and Kiley Hanlon took home the Augie Decembrele Sportsmanship Cup, named in honor of the Canton hall of famer and 1938 CHS graduate and given to two seniors who accomplished greatness on the track while being class acts.

Bahsor Mahn received the Paul Callahan Award, given to a senior who exhibited excellence in at least one of the sports played by Mr. Callahan, CHS Class of 1959. Mahn excelled in both football and basketball.

Carly Fitzgerald and Jay Kelleher were honored with the John Horack Award, given annually to two seniors who embodied the dedication shown by former CHS teacher/coach/counselor John Horack.

Kiara Cerruti and Allie McCabe were presented with the Bulldog Award, which is given to the two seniors who had the greatest impact on their teams’ successes during their four years at CHS.

Billy DeLello received the Xavier Machuga “X” Award, given annually to a senior who shows resilience, dedication and heart as exemplified by Machuga (CHS ’19) during his recovery from a brain aneurysm.

Sean Connolly and Payton McDonough were honored with the Captain’s Award, given to two seniors who were exceptional leaders both on and off the playing field.
