Business leader implores town to fix sidewalks

Kevin McCormick, president of the Canton Downtown Business Association, implored the Select Board at its meeting Tuesday night to make what he said are needed repairs to the sidewalks in the downtown area. He also asked the board to reaffirm a vote by a previous Select Board and reinstitute a $10,000 annual appropriation for maintenance in the downtown area.

“The sidewalks are horrendous,” said McCormick, who owns Richard Lewis Formal Wear. “What has happened to the downtown?”

McCormick said the business association never saw the money from the maintenance account and urged the board to “please help us.”

Select Board member John Connolly said the account may have been the casualty of budget cuts in past years but said he will meet with the group to come up with a budget and create a list of priorities for the next fiscal year.

McCormick said the progress of the Paul Revere Heritage Site has been wonderful, but the board should also turn its attention to the downtown area. “We are forgotten,” he said. “We have to get the downtown fixed and the sidewalks fixed.”

Select Board member Lisa Lopez said it is important that both the Paul Revere Heritage Commission and the Downtown Business Association work together on future programming and infrastructure to benefit both groups.
