Special Town Meeting Update: Date set for special election

After hosting three public information sessions — one in person and two via Zoom — the Canton Select Board remains in talks with the Finance and Capital Planning committees regarding financing options for the proposed acquisition of the St. Gerard’s Church property at 1860 Washington Street.

Residents must first decide whether to authorize the Select Board to purchase the property, which will go before a vote at a Special Town Meeting on Wednesday, December 1, at 7 p.m. in the CHS auditorium. If the measure passes, then a special election would be held on Tuesday, December 14, to determine whether the town should pay for the property via a debt-exclusion override. If the measure fails, then the issue is dead and the special election would not be needed.

The Archdiocese of Boston, which owns the former church site, is currently accepting outside bids; however, the town cannot submit its own bid without prior STM and special election approval. Some of the public uses that have been suggested for the property include a community center, open space and recreation, a new fire station, School Department offices and classroom space, and a new space for the departments of Elder and Human Services and Veterans Services.
