Town approves new precinct pending state review

Pending final review and acceptance by Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin, Canton will soon have seven voting precincts instead of six and the new voting location will be at the Senior Center at 500 Pleasant Street.

The new precinct as detailed by Town Clerk Tracy Kenney and accepted by the Select Board Tuesday night includes portions of precincts 1, 2 and 3. All affected residents will receive notification by mail from the Town Clerk’s Office.

The move to seven precincts follows census reports showing that Canton gained 2,800 new residents from 2010 to 2020. According to the latest federal census, Canton’s population is now 24,370.

If approved by Galvin, the new precinct map will go into effect on December 31 and will be used for the 2022 annual town election in April.

The new precinct map will be posted in all municipal buildings, posted on the town website, and advertised in the Canton Citizen.

Kenney said the choice of the Senior Center for a voting location was based on factors such as ease and availability of parking and a lack of interference from school and gym classes. The precinct map was drawn up by the town’s Board of Registrars, including Kenney …
