The Canton High golf team is off to another excellent start with a perfect 6-0 record and a comfortable lead in the Hockomock Davenport Division standings. Fresh off an undefeated campaign in 2020, the Bulldogs have now won 16 matches in a row with their last loss coming nearly two full years ago against Mansfield.

Last week the team recorded wins over Franklin, Stoughton and Milford with three different golfers earning match medalist honors. Canton also received a boost from sophomore Mekhala Costello, who had prominent scores in two of the three matches.

In the 151-166 win at Franklin Country Club last Tuesday, Conor Hunter shot an even-par 35 and was the match medalist for the third time this season. Will Gefteas shot a one-over 36 and Mike Leonetti and Nate MacDonald both shot 40s. Head coach Mike Barucci noted that this was the lowest team score he has on record for the Franklin course. “It is a difficult course and a course that we don’t play often,” he said. “They all played really well, especially Conor and Will, who had great rounds.”

The following day, Canton dominated Stoughton 148-179 at Easton Country Club behind another stellar outing from Gefteas, who shot a one-under 35. Barucci said Gefteas played a great round and was making a lot of big putts, including one on the 9th hole for an eagle. Hunter shot a one-over 37 and was hitting the ball very well. Costello and Leonetti both shot a 38 while Ryan Doucette and Charlie Cohen shot a 39. Sophomore Brendan Tourgee, in his first varsity match, shot a five-over 41, and Charlie Vaughan shot a 43. “All eight of our golfers played really well, especially the younger guys who had never played the course before,” Barucci said.

The Bulldogs finished off the week with a 154-177 home win over Milford at Blue Hill Country Club. Costello shot a one-over 35, which included an eagle on the par-4 ninth hole. Barucci said Costello played a great round and earned medalist honors for the match. Gefteas shot a 39 while Mike Leonetti, Ryan Doucette and Charlie Cohen all shot 40.

“We are getting contributions from everyone in our lineup,” noted Barucci. “Also, this week we were able to get some non-starters a chance to play in matches. Charlie Vaughan, Brendan Tourgee and Tommy Phaneuf all played in their first match this week and did great.”
