Town to consider purchase of St. Gerard’s property

By

The Canton Select Board went into executive session Tuesday night to consider if the town should have interest in purchasing the St. Gerard Majella property at 1860 Washington Street. Final Masses at St. Gerard’s will be held during the last weekend of September.

In mid-July, Reverend Thomas Rafferty, pastor of the newly renamed St. Oscar Romero Church, informed worshippers that the Canton parish will continue to use the church building that is known as St. John the Evangelist and that St. Gerard Majella Church will be closed and the property sold.

At the close of Tuesday’s open session, Select Board Chair Mike Loughran said the board will discuss the possible purchase in executive session and their decision would be disclosed at their next public meeting on September 28. The sale of the church property will be managed by the Boston Archdiocese.

The Select Board also went into executive session to consider the acquisition of property at 100 Everendon Road for access to protect a town well.

In other news from Tuesday night’s meeting:

The Select Board and School Committee will make a joint selection after a review of the candidates. Letters of interest and resumes should be sent to the Select Board office at Town Hall.

* Select Board Vice Chair Lisa Lopez reported that the Board of Health will continue to offer COVID-19 testing every Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. in the BOH parking lot at Pequitside Farm. Those interested should check the BOH website to see if appointments are needed.

* Lopez announced that the town-sponsored ceremony commemorating those who passed away from COVID-19 will be held on October 6 at 6 p.m. at the Armando Recreation Center on Pleasant Street. The rain date is October 7 at the same time and location …
