Canton Little Leaguer Owen Collins made his coaches and his hometown proud with a runner-up finish in his age group (9-10) at the MLB’s regional Pitch, Hit & Run competition held August 14 at Fenway Park — the home of the Boston Red Sox.

A standout baseball player, Collins had advanced to the regional competition by virtue of winning the local competition hosted by Canton Little League in May.

Pitch, Hit & Run competitions are held across the country every spring. Boys and girls ages 7-14 are eligible to compete in the three phases, which include pitching accuracy; hitting off a batting tee for accuracy and distance; and baserunning speed from second base to home plate.

All of the scores from the New England region are tallied and the top performers in each age group qualify to compete in the regional championship at a local MLB stadium. The winners of the regional championships then have a chance to compete at the World Series in October to be named national PH&R champion.

Collins’ summer baseball coach Ryan Archibald said, “Owen is one of the best 10-year-old ballplayers around and is a true five-tool player — he batted leadoff, started at shortstop and is also a pitcher. He is lightning fast on the bases and has one of the quickest 10-year-old bats you’ll see. He also excels at running back for the fifth grade Canton football team. As good of an athlete as he is, he is an even better kid and teammate.”
