The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has issued a revised construction timeline for the Dedham Street/I-95 Interchange Improvement project.

Originally targeted for completion in 2022, the $44 million, state-funded infrastructure project has a new expected completion date of spring 2024.

The project calls for the complete reconfiguration of a large stretch of Dedham Street — from Kirby Drive to an area west of the Neponset River — including the addition of new travel lanes (increasing from one to two lanes in each direction), a new off-ramp from I-95 northbound, widening of bridges over the Neponset River and the railroad tracks, and replacement of the bridge over I-95.

In addition, traffic signals will be installed at Shawmut Road and the two I-95 ramps (existing southbound on-ramp and new northbound off-ramp), and a dedicated turning lane will be added to allow vehicles traveling westbound on Dedham Street to turn left onto I-95 south.

To date, crews have completed bridge expansion work on the south side of the Neponset River and Amtrak bridges, installation of retaining walls along both sides of the I-95 bridge, and temporary utility relocations to facilitate bridge/ramp construction.

Upcoming work includes I-95 bridge reconstruction; I-95 north off-ramp construction and I-95 south on-ramp upgrades; work on the north side of the Neponset River and Amtrak bridges; construction of a timber pedestrian walkway under the Amtrak bridge; associated permanent utility relocations; installation of infiltration basins and retaining walls adjacent to the bridges and ramps.

Also on the work schedule are reconstruction of the intersections at Shawmut Road, Kirby Drive and University Road; full-depth roadway reconstruction project wide; and traffic signal and lighting installation.

According to MassDOT Communications Director Kristen Pennucci, there will be lane reductions beginning soon on I-95 at night in the area of the Dedham Street bridge. There will also be some intermittent lane reduction on Dedham Street during the day for utility work.
