Simons, Richard A.

By

Richard Alan Simons, 85, Massachusetts Army National Guard-Retired, of Canton, passed away in his home on June 15, 2021. Born in 1936 in Boston to the late Murray and Ida Simons, Richard was preceded in death by his brother Lewis Simons and sister Gail Finn.

Richard and his late wife, Marguerite “Peggy” Simons, raised their four children — Joshua E. Simons (Sharon), Carl W. Simons (Falmouth), the late Julie S. Droney (Canton) and Jonathan M. Simons (Middletown, NJ) — in Canton, where he volunteered for many local civic organizations and served as a trustee for the Massachusetts Hospital School. Dick’s commitment to service expanded far beyond Canton, including the Board of the YMCA of Greater Boston, the Massachusetts Military Historical Society, Catholic Charites of Brockton, the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College, and the Boston College Class of 1958 Alumni Committee. In addition to countless hours serving others, Richard and Peggy found great joy in philanthropy and provided support to many organizations serving those in need.

A proud Boston College graduate, Richard enjoyed a successful career in business, retiring from Eaton Vance Corporation over two decades ago. Retirement provided Dick with more time to travel, volunteer, read and enjoy many wonderful meals with family and friends.

While he was a wonderful father, friend and husband, Richard clearly hit his stride as a grandfather, “Buppy” to his nine grandchildren: Matthew, Maria, Alexandra, Colin, Emily, Maggie, Sean, Danny, and Abigail. He took great pride in their athletic, creative, and academic accomplishments.

Richard is also remembered as a loving and generous uncle and father-in-law by Eric Finn, Henry Droney, Randi Simons, Tong Simons and Maureen Simons.

Richard Alan Simons will be most remembered for his quick wit, booming voice, caring heart and generous spirt.
