Last week marked the start of CHS football practices and it began under unusual circumstances — with a contractor being brought in to clear the snow off the turf field.

Since then, new head coach Anthony Fallon has kept his team busy with practices held six days last week and continuing this week leading up to Wednesday’s home scrimmage with Taunton. The season then kicks off for real with a home game on Saturday, March 13, at 4 p.m. against North Attleboro.

Fallon said the schedule will consist of five games against Hockomock Davenport Division opponents and up to two additional games against Kelley-Rex teams. Currently, Canton has two home games: the opener versus NA and Thursday, April 1, against Sharon. The team will also travel to play Oliver Ames (March 19), Foxboro (March 26) and Stoughton (April 22). The lengthy break between games on April 1 and April 22 is to allow for any rescheduled games with Davenport schools and to schedule one or two games against Kelley-Rex opponents.

This year’s roster consists of 56 participants, including 27 varsity and 29 sub-varsity players. On game day, 45 players are allowed to suit up and Fallon has decided to keep the sub-varsity players away from the varsity games in case any COVID-19 cases arise.

Fallon said his players reported for practice in good shape with many having just come off a winter season. Players are adjusting to wearing both a mask and mouth guard under their helmets.

Talent wise, the team’s strength is an experienced and physical offensive line, which bodes well for the running game. Fallon, who previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator, said he has speed and quickness at the receiver and running back positions and projects his starting quarterback as Anthony Botelho. Fallon also likes his defense, which he described as big up front with speed in the linebacking corps and secondary.

“All of us are happy to be on the field and excited for this season, and excited for what we can do,” said Fallon.
