Officials beginning to map out plan for COVID vaccine

Fire Chief Charles Doody said town officials are beginning to map out a plan for distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, although it may be a few months away. “We ran the drive-through flu clinics as a prelude to a potential mass vaccination for COVID,” he said. “Once the vaccine is made available to the general public, it is likely we will replicate the drive-through model. As of now, however, neither the state not federal government have given us any direction on how the vaccine will actually get into the arms of people.”

Fire chief highlights response to COVID surge

In his latest public health message issued on December 11, Fire Chief and Emergency Services Director Charles Doody touched on the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and highlighted some of the regulatory rollbacks put in place by state and local governments.

At the state level, Doody noted the governor’s decision to return to Step 1 of Phase 3 of the commonwealth’s reopening plan as of December 13. “Capacity limits [have been] reduced to 40 percent statewide for most businesses and the limit for outdoor gatherings [has been] reduced from 100 persons to 50 persons,” he said.

Doody also reported on the town of Canton’s plan to move municipal offices to an appointment-only model and revert to a curbside pickup program for the Canton Public Library (see related items in this week’s print edition).

Commenting on the recent spike in cases, Doody said it is “clearly” a result of the Thanksgiving holiday as well as the fact that more people are indoors with the arrival of colder weather. “With Hanukkah upon us and Christmas quickly approaching, if you are planning to host a holiday celebration, keep it small,” he said. “Limit in-person holiday gatherings to only people you live with or limit your gathering to a small group of individuals with whom you are regularly in contact with and take extra precautions to protect those around you who may be at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, such as older adults or those with underlying medical conditions …
