A three-sport athlete in golf, Unified basketball and Unified track, Gefteas earned the respect of his teammates early on. “Will is an incredible role model for the younger members of the team,” said CHS golf coach Mike Barucci. “He is the true definition of what a captain should be: selfless, humble and supportive both on and off the course.”

A three-year starter on the varsity golf team, Gefteas led the Bulldogs to a perfect 10-0 record this past season and a fourth consecutive Hockomock Davenport Division title. His 37.3 scoring average was tops on the team and tied for second best in the league and he was voted by the league’s coaches as Hockomock MVP for 2020.

Academically, Gefteas excels in honors courses, earning honor roll recognition with a 3.5 GPA. “Will worked exceptionally hard every day to better himself,” said his former history teacher Jim Goff. “He was an asset to my class and is an asset to our school. He has earned the respect of staff and students though everything he strives to achieve.”

Gefteas has also established a strong presence in his community through service to others. “Will is an excellent student and an incredible golfer, but where he really shines is his community service,” Barucci said. “He has a passion for helping others and giving back.”

In his first two years at CHS, Gefteas accumulated over 600 hours of community service, volunteering to help the homeless and less fortunate through outreach projects at St. Gerard Majella, and working with organizations that support children such as Give Kids a World and Hope House.

As a member of the Outreach Committee at St. Gerard’s, Gefteas is part of a select group of students who work with members of the church to determine the annual outreach trip. He also assists with organizing a weekly senior bingo event; serves as a counselor at Kids Camp; and is an annual participant at Christmas in the City, a holiday celebration in Boston for families experiencing homelessness. This past year, Gefteas and his family were grateful for the opportunity to take care of one of the children from the shelter. “This was an amazing experience,” he said. “I got to see firsthand how much joy the kids got out of having this event, and it really showed me how much of a difference giving my time to someone else helps and changes another person’s life.”

The MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented monthly to two student-athletes who display excellence in the areas of academics, athletics and community service. Recipients receive a certificate of recognition, are featured on www.miaa.net, honored at the MIAA Awards Recognition Banquet, and will be eligible for the Harry Agganis Student-Athlete of the Year Scholarship.
