Police investigate possible illegal nightclub

By

A late-night disturbance call and subsequent police investigation led to the discovery of an alleged illegal nightclub inside a commercial building at 973 Turnpike Street last weekend.

At approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, Canton police responded to a report of a possible fight on the property, and upon arrival one officer heard a “thud,” which he described as a metal object hitting the ground. The same officer then saw a man attempting to hide an object in the trunk of a car. Officers approached the subject and searched the trunk, subsequently locating a firearm.

More officers arrived on the scene and found over 100 people on site. Further inspection revealed that there was a bar and a dance floor inside, and it was later determined that the building was being illegally rented out as a function hall. Detectives were told that patrons were charged a cover to enter the building.

Due to the nature of the incident and the extensive number of patrons, police requested and received mutual aid from both the Stoughton Police Department and the State Police. The tenant of the building and lessee will be charged with disturbing the peace and distributing alcohol without a license and in violation of the governor’s order. Canton’s building commissioner was notified and closed the property down due to numerous safety and zoning violations. The case was also forwarded to the Canton Health Department. The Select Board was due to meet in executive session Tuesday night to hear the report and consider the filing of criminal complaints.
